Since 1989, Prisoners Education Trust has been providing access to broader learning opportunities for prisoners, to enhance their chances of building a better life after release.
We do this through a grants programme which assists over 2,000 prisoners each year to study distance learning courses in subjects and levels not available in prison. We also provide advice and support, and we make the case for improving policy and practice.

30 April 2013 | PET's response to the 'Transforming Youth Custody' consultation
PET have submitted a response to the consultation on putting education at the heart of youth custody. PET and Kinetic Youth consulted with young people from five YOIs to get their views on the proposals for secure colleges and to ensure their experiences and suggestions were heard by the Ministry of Justice. Their feedback shows some evidence of good practice, but a lot of room for improving learning to make it more engaging, relevant and useful

We considered 164 applications for funding from prisoners in our March scrutiny process, and we were delighted to award 126 grants for a wide range of courses. These included a number of courses in consistently popular subjects such as Business, Counselling and Fitness, as well as some less common courses such as Illustration and Sustainable Construction.
