PLAN Seminar Series
21 Mar 2018
The Prisoner Learning Academic Network (PLAN) and UCL Institute of Education invite you to a lunchtime seminar:
Masculinities, Learning and Education: prisoners and army recruits
This event will be hosted by Dr. David Maguire, Dr. Jon Swaine and Prof. Jane Hurry from the Centre for Education in Justice at the UCL Institute for Education. This event marks the first of this year's PLAN seminars which will focus on issues around the broad theme of Diversity.
David will talk about his research on marginalised masculinities, 'anti learning cultures' and ‘failing’ schools and how this contributes to pathways to prison. David's work picks up the importance of locality/space in configurations of masculinities and learning identities. One alternative pathway for these young men is to join the army. The army have a well-developed system for moving recruits on in terms of basic skills qualifications. Jon will talk about his work on masculinities and engagement with education in the army (the good, the bad and the ugly). Jane will conclude with the results of applying intensive methods of teaching developed by the army in six adult prisons. The three presentations will raise a range of issues which we believe are critical to the success of education but receive limited attention in the programmes on offer.
The seminar will then be opened up for exploration - proposing that we need more innovative approaches to engaging men in learning, looking at the pros and cons of the approaches presented and alternative possibilities to address the issues raised.
