PET's Annual Lecture: Dame Sally Coates: Leading learning: lessons from school leadership for our prisons
11 Jul 2016
Dame Sally Coates, leader of the Coates Review of Prison Education commissioned by the Justice Secretary, acclaimed secondary school super-head and author, will speak at Prisoners’ Education Trust Annual Lecture on Monday 11th July 2016.
The Coates Review of Prison Education which Dame Sally submitted earlier this year was based on over 500 submissions of evidence from organisations and individual prisoners and teachers and numerous prison visits. It represents the most important examination of the purpose and practice of prison education for many years and potentially will set the agenda for transforming the learning experience of prisoners for decades to come. Prisoners’ Education Trust (PET) was delighted to support Dame Sally in her work through Chief Executive Rod Clark’s membership of her expert panel working on the report.
Dame Sally will reflect on her experience of leading this review for Government and will also bring her many years of outstanding achievement in leading Secondary Schools to reflect on the lessons from that sector, how they can apply to the leadership of our prisons and how our prisons can become centres of learning.
Following her talk there will be an opportunity for the audience to engage in discussion with Dame Sally and an expert panel.
As Justice Secretary Michael Gove summarised:
“Dame Sally has a wealth of experience in working with pupils in inner-city schools and in taking decisive action to improve schools’ performance. She took charge of Burlington Danes Academy when it became an ARK [multi-academy trust] school, leading it from special measures to outstanding in all areas. In her current role as Director of Academies South for United Learning she oversees the provision of education in 16 academies and 7 independent schools. She recently carried out a review of teaching standards for the Department for Education and I know she will inject fresh thinking into the neglected area of prison education so that many more offenders’ lives can be turned around.”
Dame Sally has written about her experience in School Leadership in her book: Headstrong: 11 lessons of school leadership.
